May - Singapore and International Development: A small state's perspective on capacity building, foreign policy, and diplomacy
JDI , in collaboration with SIA Student Initiative on Asia, was pleased to host a discussion with Ambassador Foo who shared his insights on the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP), the primary platform through which Singapore extends technical assistance to more than 100 developing countries around the world. He spoke about the SCP in relation to development, foreign policy and diplomacy. Ambassador Foo is the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Singapore to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva. He is also the former Director-General of the Technical Co-operation Directorate where he managed the Singapore Cooperation Programme.
April - JDI Networking Event
The purpose of this networking event was to bring together IHEID students interested in diplomacy and to give them an opportunity to interact both with each other and with our guest, Mr. Tapio Pyysalo, a Finnish diplomat. Mr. Pyysalo is currently the First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of Finland in Geneva, working in the WTO sector and focusing on dispute settlement, trade facilitation, market access and accessions. Before his position in Geneva, Mr. Pyysalo has held several positions within the Finnish Foreign Ministry, including his posting in Brussels (NATO & EU agenda).
April - NGOs: Emerging Actors of 21st century Diplomacy
How are NGOs influencing agenda-setting and decision-making in the international organisations of Geneva? This seminar featured Philippe Dam, Deputy Director of Human Rights Watch, according to whom: “NGOs need to have that balance between ambition and pragmatism.”
March - International Mediation in Contemporary Diplomacy: A Swiss Perspective
"Mediation is becoming as complex as the conflicts. It is a marketplace in international diplomacy." This JDI seminar featured Ambassador Alexandre Fasel, Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the UN at Geneva.
February - Multilateral Negotiations in Geneva: a Hands-On Workshop
As a part of Conference “Mittendrin und trotzdem nich dabei? Das Selbstverständnis der Schweiz in Europa” organized by Foraus Geneve, we prepared a full-day workshop on multilateral negotiation for a group of motivated students. During the morning session participants learned about the strategies and various negotiation methods. In the afternoon we had the honour to welcome Ms. Sibille, a diplomat from the EU Delegation to the UN at Geneva, who shared her diplomatic experience with us and led a simulation of Human Rights Council resolution negotiation.
